Why You Shouldn’t Buy A Dog As A Christmas Present

Writer: Animal Transit Boxes LtdAnimal Transit Boxes Ltd

As we reach the final countdown for Christmas, the scramble to find the best present is well and truly on. The excitement builds and builds, and you want to surprise your loved one with the greatest possible gift. You think ‘oh they love dogs, let’s get them a dog!’. You picture the look on their face when they open a large box wrapped with a bow and find an adorable puppy staring back at them. But it doesn’t always work out like that, with a staggering amount of pets returned before the Christmas period is even over. In 2017, 127 dogs were dropped off at Dogs Trust shelters in the two weeks around Christmas.

Read on to find out some reasons why a dog doesn’t make a good Christmas gift.

Novelty

As they have been given as a present, some people regard a dog as a novelty, not a real creature. They spend the few weeks after Christmas having a great time, but soon realise the amount of work they have to put in doesn’t agree with them.

They Don’t Want It

You should never buy someone a pet unless they have already agreed to it. Your friend might say she wants a dog, but she doesn’t have the space, time or energy to look after one currently. If you’re in a relationship, springing a pet on them may seem like a big step forward they’re not ready for, or in a worst-case scenario, they could’ve lied about liking dogs in an attempt to get to know you.

Think of The Whole House

Your adorable young niece or nephew may love a brand new friend for Christmas, but their parent’s frowns are a whole different story. Think about every single person who lives in the household that you’re buying a dog for, as in most cases they’ll all end up caring for the animal at some point. Especially if you give a pet to a child, who will not be able to walk, feed and care for it by themselves.

Why You Should Buy A Dog For Christmas

It’s not a terrible idea in all cases. If you and the recipient have already agreed on the gift, they’ll love it.

Pet shelters often find themselves overpopulated over the Christmas period, so considering adopting a dog from one. You’ll be providing an abandoned or discarded animal a brand new home that they will grow to love.
